Since Marcel Mauss’ observations on culturally diverse body techniques (Mauss 1973), social scientists studying the body have tended to claim that the body is a product of specific cultural practices (Turner 1995). Hence, any analysis of the significance of the body must be set within the historical and socio-cultural context.
