About the Journal
Social Medicine is a quarterly publication of the Social Medicine Publication Group, located in New York, USA. Our journal addresses a global audience at an international level. Thus, we will publish contributions in English and Spanish, without translation costs to the authors.
Academic journals have largely been in the hands of developed countries. We recognize this and organize the journal to be able to welcome authors and readers from a variety of countries.
We intend to use peer reviews not only as a means of assuring quality, but also to mentor non-English- speaking authors, helping them to overcome the hurdles in seeking to have their work published in the international health literature.
We intend to offer space to papers that are not welcome in other journals for their political remarks or social-medical perspectives. It is our hope that papers that would otherwise not get printed, may appear in this journal.
Social Medicine supports and promotes activism and political organization to achieve the World Health Organization goals of “Health for All” and the holistic health perspective. For us, health is a fundamental human right that should be promoted by universal public systems of health care.
The Journal will produce materials that are strong scientifically, intellectually honest, free of commercial biases, carefully written and well presented.
The Journal provides open access to all its content, based on the principles of free circulation and global exchange of knowledge.
Social Medicine is published on a quarterly basis, simultaneously in English and Spanish. The journal is scheduled for January, May, and September.
In many ways we work as a traditional academic journal, following the codes of the IJCE, using a system of rigorous peer review, and focusing on scientific papers. However, there are important differences: we do not accept advertising nor funding from drug companies.
Thanks to the availability of the free electronic journal software Open Journal Systems and to the fact that the editors work as volunteers’ ad honorem, we can work on a relatively small budget. So, we do not charge authors nor readers and we do not accept advertisements. However, because of the significant translating and copy-editing expenses, we gladly accept and are very grateful for donations.
The works published in Social Medicine are the property of the Social Medicine Publication Group, and for any partial or total reproduction, it is necessary to cite the source. The publishing institution encourages the authors of the works published in the journal to
distribute or post a copy of the revised and formatted version on their personal or corporate websites, or in any Open Access repository. This version will be sent by the editor to the main author or corresponding author.
We stand for the Copyright agreement that allows non-commercial reproduction of our papers, except where otherwise is clearly indicated.
Authors are welcome to submit their work and experiences to the following sections:
1. Original Research
Texts prepared with primary data, state of the art critical assessments on specific topics, and use of tertiary data to build new perspectives. Its structure usually includes: Introduction. Materials and Methods. Results. Discussion. References (in the Vancouver system, it is recommended to read our editorial norms).
2. Themes and Debates
Contributions or participation in relevant political or scientific controversies that affect collective health and well-being, in which different positions and points of view are discussed.
3. Classics in Social Medicine
There are documents that made history for their socio-medical contributions. Some were not considered popular at the time, so it is in the Journal's interest to make them known.
4. Social Medicine in Practice (health activism)
The Journal also publishes struggles for health as a right, the actions of organized groups that make important contributions, or collective actions of resistance to the loss of rights.
5. Book and events reviews
This section is self-explanatory, reviews of important books and socio-medical events are welcome, summarizing their main contributions.
6. News & Events
We promote important news and events for the construction of socio- medical and collective health thinking.
The Journal adheres to the ethical guidelines for academic publishing established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (https://publicationethics.org/). Including the detection and elimination of possible plagiarism.
