Sistemas de provisión de cuidados a la salud frente al Covid-19: la necesidad de respuestas autogestivas entre los pueblos originarios de los EUA

Resumen

Las comunidades indígenas de pueblos originarios en Alaska han experimentado tasas desiguales y más altas de morbilidad, hospitalización y mortandad por Covid-19 en relación a la población blanca no hispana mayoritaria. Estas desigualdades son el resultado de siglos de racismo y opresión. Los cuidados a la salud convencionales han luchado financieramente para sobrevivir a la crisis y están mal posicionados o capacitados para satisfacer las necesidades de los miembros de las tribus. El Servicio de Salud Indio, al estar mal financiado y ser a menudo percibido sospechosamente por la población que atiende, en gran medida no ha conseguido mitigar el impacto de Covid-19 en estas comunidades vulnerables. Existe una necesidad urgente de expandir los servicios de cuidados a la salud dirigidos por indígenas.
